Report of the Feilding State School Committee for the year ending 31 at December, 1883. Your Committee have much pleasure m reporting that the attendance of the children has increased during the past year as shown m the following table, namely : —
Your Committee have put the compulsory clauses of the Act m force, and believe it has had a tendency to increase the attendance; owing to the insufficiency of school space and other causes, the com" pulsory clauses of the Act have not beeu rigidly enforced. The committee has made an application to the Board for a new school and believe that when they receive their building grant from the Government the request will be complied with. The committee being desirous of placing this important school on a better basis, considered it advisable to recommend a change m the teaching staff. After considerable trouble this has been effected, to the evident advantage of the scholars. The present staff now consists of the master, assistant master, assistant mistress, two pupil teachers, and two cadets. A truant inspector has been appointed, who has paid several visits to this district, and your committee be^ive has had a good effect m causing more regularity iv the attendance of the children. The i'lav-gruund has been much improved during the pastyearby the erection of a close boarded tence, gravelling, and draining, and by tho erection of a bell tower. Some £31 has been expended on it. The schoo and Master's residence ha\e been painted. The school has been ventilated, which the committee believe will have a beneficial effect m preserving the health of the teachers, and likewise the scholars. Several additions have been made to the furniture of the school, such as maps, desks, platforms, &c. There have been 22 meetings of
the Committee during their term of office, and the following show the number each member has attended : — Thompson, 21; Fostar. 19; Bray, 15 ; Worsibld, 18 ; Watts, 21 ; Towler, 18 ; Murray, 8.
