The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. TUESDAY, FEB. 19, 1884.

Residents at Terrace End will be glad to observe that there is every prospect of the proposed school m that locality becoming an established fact. The Education Board has expressed itself as not averse to the school, provided it is assured that it will not rob the present school. In reference to this we may point out that the existing school is at present greatly overcrowded, and that a large number of children are kept away for this reason, so that the assurance mentioned can be readily given. There can be no question that the establishment of a school at Terrace End will be attended with the very best results, not only to the children m that locality to whom the present school is not available, but also to those residing m other parts of the town. We believe that not only will the school at Terrace End not rob the existing school, m the sense of lessening its average attendance, but that even after it is opened the latter will very shortly require enlargement, particularly if the Truant Inspector does his work m this locality. As will be gathered fvom the report, the Board has not the funds available to erect a school at Terrace End, and m the meantime a building will have to be hired, and a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Stewart and Woodroofe, has been appointed to make enquiries relative to the matter, In order that no time may be lost m opening the school it has been arranged to forward their recommendation to the Boord m time for its next meeting. At the meeting of the Committee it was mentioned that the Church of England Sunday School room could be obtained for the sum of £15 per annum, but it was felt that this building is not m a situation sufficiently convenient ior the bulk of

those m whose behalf the present movement is being made. Another building mentioned was the one known as Deard's Hall, but an objection raised against this was its proximity to a public-house. It is probable that the sub-committee will be able to fix upon a more suitable building, and m any case we trust, ere long, to be able to announce the successful opening of a school at Terrace End.
