A t the back of the course Nelson took second place to the' railway .turn, when he went to the front. Leonora was third. , The others were m a bunch. On, entering the straight, Emir Bey and Nelsonfwere abreast. The Poet and Sou-wester joining m a bunch. At the jßtand the order was Emir Bey, Radames, Nelson, Leonora, Sou'- ; wester, and The Poet well up, with Maori beaten. At the entrance to the straight a sheet might have covered all the six, but Sou' •« wester, who had been carefully nursed, was then let out, and Emir Bey fell back beaten. The Poet took second.place with Nelson almost level. A grand race ensued, Sou-wester being half a length ahead of Nelson and The Poet, who tied for second place.Emir "Bey half a length behind ; Leonora about a similar distance, fifth ; .Radames close up. The betting was even on Sou-wester, 5 to 2 against Emir Bey, 6 to 1 Nelson, 8 to 1 Leonora and the Poet. The others 10 to 1. Nursery Plate, £ mile. Assegai, list 121 b 1 Blackheath, list 2lb 2 Louie and Somnus started, but were distanced, and not placed. Railway Stakes Handicap, £ mile.
