The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 1884.

1 Tenders close at noon to-morrow for additions to the Palmerston North Goods shed. The Grand Lodge session of the Good Templars is now silting at Oamai. ru. The attendance of Palmerston people at the Feilding Races yesterday was very large. About 200 left by the morn* ing train and quite as many more must driven through. Mr Alfred Bish, Mayor of Masterton and Mr W, P. Roydhouse of the Wairarapa Daily, were visitors to Palmerston yesterday. In this issue the Wanganui Education Board advertises some sections to let m one of t' c Board's endowment blocks. Particulars will be found m the adver* tisement. The attendance at Mr J. Vivian's sale of drapery m the Forester's Hall on Saturday was rery fair aiid good prices were realised. The boards at the Foresters' flail were occupied lasfr night hy a troupe of Halcombe minstrels, of whom the chief were Messrs J. Galbraith (Johnsoo), J. Keen (Tambo), and Greo'ge Gascoigne (Bones). The band consisted of viclin, accotdeon, cornet, &c, respectively played by .Messrs Galbraitb, Marsh, Bchieubftch, and F Child, and gave very good music. Th« company <aye " The New Orleans Schoolmaster," •' The Eccentric Girl," and " A New Machine from America," which were well sustained, besides a Lancashire clog hornpipe. Mr J. Vivian's residence m Cuba street had a narrow escape yesterday morning. After the excitement caused by the fire which destroyed Mrs Coleman's residence had subsided, Mr Vivi« an and his family retired to rest again at about 315 a.m. About an hour after Mr Vivian was awakened by a young lady staying with the family calling out, "What is that light overhead?" Oa examination Mr Vivian discovered that the roof was on fire, a spark from Mrs Colemau's building having doubtless been the cause. Fortunately he sue* ceeded m extinguishing it, when it was found that a hole about a foot e>quare had been burnt m the roof. The Land Court was again adjourned, today till 10 a.m. to-morrow. It is not probable that the natires will not receive their money till Thursday or Friday. In connection with the fire by which Mrs Coleman's residence wae destroyed, it is worthy of note that the greater number of the inhabitants of Palmerston did not know of the occurrence till next day. The necessity for the erection of a suitable firebell could not receive greater illustration.
