The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. SATURDAY. APRIL 19, 1884. THE THORNDON ELECTION.
•The two principal candidates— Mr Bunny and Dr Newman— have addressed the Thorndon electors, and the contest is now m full swing. It is, however, only a very small affair after all. The two speeches made so far are not even up to tbe lowest average of election speeches, being mediocre to a degree. To the large questions which are now agitating the public mind there is nothing but the barest rvJerence, whilst neither candidate has displayed any real grip of State affairs. It is painfully evident Mr Bunny is not what he was, t and that experience has not ripened Dr Newman since his Foxton contest. It is a matter for regret that m so intelligent a constituency as Thorn* don there should be such a dearth of qualified men that the electors are compelled tp choose between a professional joker like Dwan, an immature visionary like Newman, and a superannuated politician like Bunny Surely there is still time to secure the services of some politician of at least average merit. Wellington is not honbringitselfbyitsconductregarding this election, which almost amounts to political suicide. We have read both speeches though carefully, and there are but few grains of wheat m the chaff. So far as we can judge Mr Bunny stands the best chance, but there is this satisfaction about the business, that whichever of the trio is elected will not hold the «eat for long, as the general election will take place m December for certain, unless indeed there is a dissolution at an earlier date.
