Breach of Promise Case.
Per Press Association. Dunedin, June 17, The breach of .promise case — Fynmore v Arton, occupied the Supreme Court all day. The plaintiff claims d 8750 damages. She is a widow with eight children, formerly residing iv Timaru, but now m Dunedin. She states that Arton, who isa'"civil engineer, formerly , manager of Bruce's flour mills, Timaru, now m Dunedin, used to visit her frequent tly m Timaru, and made certain proposals. She asked him if he meant marriage; and he said so. As a result of their intimacy an i: f ant was •born, m April, 1888. She now knew th«*t defendant was a married man, but did not know it, until she instituted, proceedings. Defendant denied that he had promised plain-; tiff marriage, and he denied the paternity of.the child. He had told the plaintiff he was a married man. He used to yisit ; plaintiff m. .Timaru, .butit =Was because he found plaintiff's daughter, Edith, a very ; engage ing girl. -He had nevei contributed to tbe infant's support, but had given plaintiff £5 to bury! her child, and to help her i but of - her difficulties. The case was not concluded. Later, The jury could not agree- m the breach of promise case, and a verdict of three-tourths was accepted. Damages were given to the amount of £50.
