This day. Mr Benjamin Ponks, ex-mayor and who sat for Auckland City West m 1877 died last night, Sir George Grey received a tolagramfromfche Christchurch Working Men's Political Association asking him to stand for Christchurch .North. The case was as follows :— The corporation claimed the lan-l on which MrPlimmer's wharf is built, for reclaiming purposes, but the corporation refused to admit their title. The Court of Appeal decided m favor of the corporation, but the Privy Council reversed their decision. Messrs Piimmer and Eeeves, as tenants of the land, demand £12,000 coropensa* tion, and Mr Jacob Joseph, as owner, £3000, which compensation the Jourt will now have to assess. The lad, Frederick White, who > was injured by a truck on Tuesday, died last night. The Doric sails for Lyttelton this afternoon. New Zealand War Medals have been issued to Major Edwards of the Colonial Defence Force, Trooper John Brown, Kai Iwi Cavalry, and Private Warwick, of the Wanganui Militia. -
