MR. MACARTHUR'S SERVICES.
Tothe Editor. Sir, — Tbe Feilding Star commeriiog on tbe bashfulness of Mr Macarthur during his candidature m nob reminding us of tbe fact how he lost the soles from off his boots m helping us out of tbe mud and mire. This is rich indeed. I am inclined to think that it was good grace on the part of Mr Macarthur to get a flunkey to strike the note for him. For all who know anything about tbe delicacy of bis conscience will admit that what would abash him would bash a bull. I am, &c, J. Hanlon. [While inserting Mr Han lon's letter for the reason that onr cot's respondence column is perfectly open for the iwjuvssinn of opinion, we may lemark, f .sty, tiiat our estimation of the independence of the Star is very different to that held by Mr Hanlon, and we do not for one moment believe either that tbe paragraph was inspired by the one to whom it refers, or that, the editor would respond to such a proceding. Secondly, it does not matter one wb it who struck the note,if it bas the vroe sound, and there can be no denial that the Star paragraph was fully justified . Mr Macarthur bad indeed no need to &1lude tp his services, m the' past. That be haa been a jealous aud able worker for bis district, all who are acquainted with the history of Manawatn will at once admit. This fact is well brought out by his opponent m their endeavors to show that if elected his interests will not lie m Pa l merston, and tbey there" fore fear that the energy and capacity of tho man will be exerted as against it. But it bas already been conclusively shown that Mr Macarthur has, if anything, a greater si-ake iv Palmerstoi than iv Feildmg, so that even if it is assumed that he wiil f^vor any particular parr, this should tell to ,his advantage'with Pa'q^e'SiQnians. We be.lieve, however, ; that Mr Macarthur will, if elected, carry out tbe duties ol a representative with impartiality and he wUI cen'a ; nly do so with ability aud zeal, ie tbe past is any index of tbe future— Ed. M. D. Times.]
