THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
To the Editor, Sic,— Would you kindly inform me if the Borough Council proceeds ings, m which Mr L. G. West took part and voted, are legal, he being an alien ; as I rotice m your paper lately that he has been naturalised, and not being eligible for a seat m the Council du'ing the past year or more, I am surprised at him coming forward as a candidate when he knew he was not a British subject. He should be put at the bottom of the poll this time. I am, &c, Lex. [Our correspondent forgets that the disability he' refers to does not apply to local bodies. Even if not naturalised, Mr West would be quite justified' m seekiug election, for the reason that he is a ratepayer and, as such, entitled to vote afc any borough election. , So long as a man can do good service it matters little to what nation he belongs; It will be a. sorry day for the colony if its inhabitants begin to quarrel among themselves because of varying nationalities. We trust elections m this Borough wiil always be decided with regard to the public acts of public men, and that the electors will never be influenced by any considerations of race, nationality, or creed.— Ed. M.D.T.]
