GAMBLING ON RESERVES.
The Coursing Club has decided not to license any bookmakers for its forthcoming meeting, and in a conversation 'with the Mayor yesterday, representatives of that body conveyed this intimation and promised to give the Council a guarantee in writing, that as far as lay in their power their meetings would be conducted so a3 not to giye public offence. It is assumed in some quarters that the bookmakers will be able to raid the grounds and bet as they lvke without being amenable to the law ; but if the police do their duty and issue prosecutions it will probably be found that a public recreation ground is a "place" withiti the meaning of the Act, and that substantial penalties can be exacted. If this proves not to be the case, representations will be made to the Minister of Justice by tho editor of this journal to introduce a clause dealing with such cases in the Bill which has just been introduced into the House and read a second time
