POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council on Saturday, the following were present:— Crs Philpoit (Chairman), Arbuckle, Body, Clarke, Hammond, Russell, Osborne. CORRESPONDENCE. . F. W. Savell, Delaware, wrote asking the permission of the Council to erect a fence along the road of Section 24 Block XVl.—Consideration deferred. Denis McCarthy wrote agreeing to the Council cutting a drain along the main road in front of his place at Holley's Hill.—Received. Mr E. Hayhes, Awahou, gave written notice that he dedred to sever his connection with the Council.—.Resignation accepted. Isaac O'Hagan wrote asking for a refund of a special rate by him and for which he alleged he should not have been charged. Messrs. Guy and Purnell, Sawmillers, Apiti, wrote requesting permission to put' a tram on the road leading from Black Bridge to the back of Mr Purnell's sections.—Granted, subject to the ap proval of the Engineer. A letter was received from P. Hanlon, who asked for permission to oart 1500 yards of met'il from the Reserve. It was decided that the permission could not be granted. COUNTY RANGER. James A. Fraser, County Ranger, tendered his resignation. Three implication's for the position were received. It was resolved that Mr Fraser bo written to, pointing out that the Council was dissatisfied by the manner in which he had carried out his duties as ranger. Mr J. Shadbolt was appointed ranger. MISCELLANEOUS. H. F. Richards drew attention to the disgraceful state of Brice street from the Apiti Government school down to the Creek. A petition was also received from six ratepayers, asking that the Council should form and metal Beven chains of road in Bruce street, Apiti. The matter was left in the hands of Cr Osborne. On the motion of Cr Ru3sell, it was decided to call tenders for the formation of Finnis' track. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote in reference to the petition of the residents of Pohangina, praying that Section 54. Block X, Pohangina, should be set aside as a Scenic Reserve. On the receipt of a report from the ranger on the matter, the Commissioner would give the petition further consideration.— Received.

On tbe motion of Cr Clark the thanks of the Council were accorded Mr Wheeler for the saving he had affected In the administration of the clerical work.

The Engineer reported that the river protective work at the Ferry Road was progressing fairly satisfactorily. He had found it necessary to protect three chains of the bank along the roadside, and although the erosion had been very severe, he had every confidence in the efficacy of the work. He urged upon the Council the necessity of getting tbe work of the Pohangina Bridge under way at the earliest possible moment, in order that the advantage of the Summer season might be gained.—The report was received.

On the motion of Cr Clark, it was resolved tbat the following general rates be made and levied :—Awahou Riding, lid in the £; Coal Creek Riding, Id"; Mangaono Riding, l^d ; Mangatiri Riding, 1§& ; Pohangina Riding, fd ; Tamaki Riding, l^d; Umutoi Riding, 2d. Mr Haselden waited on the Counoil to bring under its notice tbe oondition of the culverts in Wbariti road. He also requested the Council to take away certain points in the road.—The Council authorised Mr Haselden to engage Borne person to remedy the culverts, the expenge of the work to be paid by the Council. The rounding of the points was deferred.
