WHEN DUTY CALLS.

We congratulate the schoolmasters and committeemen of Palmerston North on having set an example of attachment to duty and fidelity to principle which other masters and committeemen will find indeed worthy, though hard, to emulate. They were asked to allow the children to. participate in the celebration of Arbor Day, but refused, preferring to set before, the children that ideal 'of hard, uncompromising work, and that abnegation of trivial and ephemeral pleasures which seems so wanting amongst many of the elders in this over-prosperous community. Shame-faced and repentant the Beautifying Society has given, over the debauchery of public tree-plant-ing and will, no doubt, carry out its operations in ales 3 ostentatious, and in fact, a more modest and becoming manner than its executive originally contemplated. The. lesson is salutory and seasonable. There are too many holidays in New Zealand, and a greater consumption of cakes and ale than is good for the aommunity. What is required is a Spartan regime in which the people will come to realise the absolute impropriety and uselessness •of knocking off work to plant trees. And the time to teach the lesson is in early youth, for lessons so learned are not soon forgotten. We congratulate the schoolmasters and committees of Palmerston North !
