Stable Double Scores at Woodville

Tigerism and Royal Bengal Win Principal Events Good Fields - Close Finishes The Wc-odville District Jockey Club’s popular Summer fixture opened, yesterday under favourable conditions and patrons enjoyed excellent racing. The day was fine though there was a fairly strong breeze blowing and the course was in first-class order. The feature of the day’s racing was the success of the New Plymouth double, Mr. A, Lile’s horses, Tigerism and Royal Bengal, winning the principal handicaps, the finish in each case being an exciting one. Riotous Scores in Hurdles. Tlio public went for Blacksmith (£100) and Okopiia (£9B) in. the Hurdles but the dividends were returned by Riotous, who was having his first outing over hurdles, Manuiri and Ex Douo. The favourite was in a nice position all the way but he ran down his fences and three furlongs from home was too far back to give his supporters any hope. Riotous was in the van all the way and finished strongly to hold oil Manuiri ’a challenge. The order through the straight the first time was Riotous and Blacksmith from Ex Bono, Okopua, Manuiri and Invictus. There was little alteration over the next half mile. Miss Hastings was last. Four furlongs from home Taura Lad came down and Miss Hastings went oner the top of him. Manuiri was moving up and he followed Riotous into the straight ahead of Ex Dono and Blacksmith. Once over 'the last fence Riotous went on to win by a length from Manuiri and half a dozen lengths back came Ex Dono. Blacksmith was fourth followed by Okopua, Invictus and Statuary. The mishap at the four furlongs was caused by Taura Lad getting on to Blacksmith’s heels. This brought him down and Miss Hastings could not get clear in time to save herself. Neither bay was hurt. Miss Hastings had her nose broken. Acron Beats Pladic.

Pladic (£219) and Acron (£110) car- 1 riod over half the machine in the Maiden Plato and they wero first and second, Acron going too well for the favourite over the last hit to get the bigger end of the stake. Lackstono and Pladic were first to show out from a scratchy start and they led to the far turn from Acron, Mac Ccana and Outspan. Tkcro was little alteration going across the top and Lackstone led into the straight from Acron, l’ladio, Outspan and Bonnie Vale. Goon after they straightened up, Morris got the favourite through on tho rails and half way down the running looked likely. Voitro on Acron then arrived on the scene and after a short tussle took the lead. Morris made desperate elforts over tho last bit but could made no impression, Acron holding tho favourite easily at the finish to get the verdict by a head. Bonuio Valo was tliiid .six lengths away and Lackstone was fourth followed by Spcarskot and Outspan. Tigerism Won But Chopin Was Unlucky. '

'rigorism (£192) was a good favourite for the Bolton Handicap and lie duly landed but only by a bead from tho second favourite, Chopin, which was mado to cover a lot. of extra ground. Kuanui was third in the betting order and lie was not a bad third. A good start was effected and when the lino had been broken La Foupeo and Shrewd led out of the straight from Jayson, '.rigorism, Atholspear, Kuanui, My Own and Chopin. Into tho back it was-La Foupeo from Shravyd, Jayson, Tigerism and Athotepear, tho field being woll bunched. Six furlongs from home Chopin started to move forward. La Foupee- and Shrewd showed the way across tho top and into tho straight from Atholspoar, Chopin and Tigerism. Tho finish was a' good ono and at tho bottom of tho running Chopin and Tigerism ranged up alongside tho leaders’. A. furlong from the post they drew away from tho others and Tiger-

ism responded well to tako the decision from Chopin by a head. Ruanui was two and a half lengths away third and Atholspear was fourth. Bhrewd and My Own were the next to finish. Tigo.rism won well but Chopin appeared to be a bit unlucky.

Classy Youngsters Prom Neale Stables. The Nursery Handicap proved a triumph for tho Bulls trainer, A. E. Neale, Who prepared tho first and second stake earners. The locally trained Gipsy Love was a firm favourite, Bon Rapido, owned by the Palmerston North sportsman, Mr. M. Millar, being second choice and Arise, a beautifully filly, seventh in the betting order. Gipsy Lovo was quickest to begin and she led to the turn from Bon Rapide, sliver j Beam aad Arise. The last named went! forward and joined Gipsy Love in the] van, the pair leading the -way to tnej straight from Ban Rapide, Silver Beam and Lavina. A furlong from the post Gipsy Love, Bon Rapide ami] Arise wero in lino and in a good finish] Bon Rapido beat her stable mate,! Arise, by half a neck. Gipsy Love was a length away third and After Money was fourth followed by Silver Beam and Lavina.

Stable Double Lands. All started in tho Ootc Handicap, Souchong (£174) and Royal Bengal (£173) carrying most money. Lack and Hunting Cry were well supported. Hunting Cry, ridden by the newly-arriv-ed Australian apprentice who rides with very short irons, delayed the start but tho field went away in line, Lbo order, when they had settled down, being Lack, Souchong, Aston, Royal Hunting, Royal Bengal and Hunting Cry. After two furlongs Souchong took up tho running and ho led into the straight followed by Lack, Aston and Royal Bengal. Hunting Cry had dropped back a Jong way in tho early stages but he was beginning to close the gap though still well away from tho leaders at the home turn. Souchong was going along niceiy at the bottom of the straight and a furlongs from the post looked likely to win. Royal Bengal, however, put in a brilliant run and got up in time to win by half • lcngtn from Souchong. Lack was three-quar-ters of a length away third and Royal Hunting was fourth. Royal Bengal’s victory rounded oil the stable double. Au inquiry was held into tho interference) with Royal Hunting by Royal Bengal and P. Atkins, rider of Royal Bengal, was held to have como over on to Royal Hunting and was suspended for 14 days for careless riding.

False Scent Pays False Price. The public went for Sabatini, Broken Rule and Copper King in the Mangarawa Handicap but tho winner, False Scent, was at a good price. The .start was not a good ono and False Scent had much tho bost of it. Tho early order was False Scent, Golden Shadow, Purse, Dick Whittington, Broken Rule, Forest Stag, Navaho and Popctte. Navaho and Copper King were among the last away but Navaho got an early ruu on the rails and was in fourth place at the half mile where False Scent and Purse were the leaders from Golden Shadow. Crossing tho top Copper King began to move forward round the others. Approaching the straight entrance Purse dropped back and Falso Scent turned for home ahead of Navaho, Golden Shadow, Copper King, which was “burning the wind,” Forest Stag, Broken Rulo and Purse. In tho run to the judge Navaho put out a determined challenge but False Scent had plenty in reserve. Copper King then put out a claim bat False Scent was shaken up and he went past the judge a length to the good, Copper King getting up in time to beat Navaho by a head for second money. Broken Rule was fourth followed by Golden Shadow and Ben Hur. Chock Say Wins Nicely.

Ivahunoke (£190), Tahoma (£152) and Chock Gay (£11(5) were sorted out for the Whariti Handicap for which a field of 13 went to the post. Following a good start they raced in lino to tho turn, Kahunoke loading out of the straight from Joyspear, Rhea, Saltpot, Flower and Tahoma. Rhea and Tahoma went to the front and they led along tho back from Joyspear, Flower, Galtpot, Red Flush, Kahunoxe and Chock Gay which moved up quickly to lead across tho top from Galtpot, Rhea, Tahoma, Greenhorn, Brambletorn, Kahunoke and Flower. Bramolctorn w T cnt round the field as they raced for the straight and the order at, the homo turn was Chock Gay and Brambletoru from Galtpot and Tahoma, Rhea, Greenhorn, Kahunoke and Joyspear. Chock Say finished gamely and held off Bramblotorn to win by a nock. Greenhorn finished fast into third place half a length away from Brambletorn. Saltpot was fourth followed in by Kahunoke, Flower, Red Flush and Tahoma. A Close Finish.

Thc day’s programme concluded with the Borough Handicap. There were only livo starters but after a slow run first half there was an exciting sprint homo, the finish being one of the best of the day. As was to bo expected, tho public went solidly for Gold Trail and. Carfex and they returned the dividends. Carfcx was first out but Anemometer quickly took up tho running to lead to tho far turn from Carfex, Nightmare, Arajcan and Gold Trail. Anemometer and Nightmare showed the way to the straight from Carfex and Gold Trail aud tho field was bunched when they turned for home. A good finish saw Gold Trail get up in l j last stride to beat Carfex by a head, Anemometer being two lengths away third and Nightmare was fourth.
