Tragic Happenings Follow Society Wedding

SYDNEY, Dec. 1

The happiness occasioned in Sydney not long ago by . the marriage of two people prominent in society circles was wrecked on Monday last, when the bride collapsed and died suddenly and the bridegroom was critically, injured as the result of a car which he was driving crashing down a gorge. The principals in ttm tragic tiaopMiings wore Mr and Mrs Harold J. Howes, of Manning Road, a fashionablo suburb of Sydney. They were married on September 22, the bride being a daughter of Mr and Mrs Langham Dale, ot Asblicld. The wedding created a great dcaJ of social interest, aid the panics were given a memorablo send-off when they departed in the steamer Change, to spend their honeymoon in the Cast. They returned to Sydney less than a fortnight ago, and while their house was being prepared for them they stayed at an hotel. Mr and Mrs Howes were extremely popular, and their return to Syc'rey was marked by mar.y welcome-homo pm ties. On Monday, with little warning, Mrs Howes collapsed, and she died shorl'y afterwards as the result of a heart attack. Mr tlowcs almost collapsed timsolf when he heard the new.-;, lie appeared to be overcome with grief. He could hardly believe that his wife was dead, and without giving any hint as to his plans he took his car out of the garage and went for a drive. The accident occurred a long way from tho city, and it is believed that the man’s mind became a blank.

Nobody saw the accident, but the car was discovered by two other motorists at the foot of a cliff, 40ft. below the road. It was- with great difficulty that the wrecked car was reached, and it was then discovered that tho driver, who was alone, was critically injured. His skull was fractured. Assistance had to be secured before he could be carried to the road and taken by ambulance to hospital.
