DRAINAGE BOARD AFFAIRS From Our Own Correspondent. The monthly meeting of tho Moutoa Drainage Board was held at Foxton on Thursday evening. Present were Messrs. J. Chrystall (chairman), B. G. Gower, W. E. Barber, D. Purcell, and the clerk and treasurer (Mr. G. V. Fraser). 4 Reporting on the finances' of the board, tho treasurer stated that all of the bank accounts were in credit, the amount concerned being £-152 6s 4d. Tho state of the main ledger accounts, all of which were in credit, were: General fund account, £265 2s 2d; interest account, £lll Os 2d; workers’ dwelling sinking fund account, £76 4s. Dealing with the rate position, the treasurer stated that the position this year was decidedly better than was tho case during the .previous year. Tho total rates levied for the year ended March, 1982, amounted to £1328 Os lOd, of which figure the sum of £326 6s Gd was'unpaid in December of last year. For the current- year tho total rates levied amounted to £1509 16s 6d, of which sum only £298 19s 9d remained unpaid that day. Although the penalty on unpaid rates had always previously been made effective as from December 1,( as stated on the rate demands, tiie treasurer suggested that additional grace bo given this year so that the penalty may operate as from January, 1933. Members expressed satisfaction at the gratifying manner in which the iatcs had come in and thought that the suggestion for allowing more grace before imposing tho penalty this year was a good one. It was also resolved that "ten per cent, bo added to all rates remaining unpaid on • January 22, 3933, and that same be then sued for without further notice.”

The foreman (Mr. T. A. Robinson) stated in his Toport that the work of deepening Carter’s drain, a distance of 18 chains, was completed, and that the work of cleaning tho "swangrass” section of tho main drain, starting from the diagonal drain intake, was proceeding. Minor adjustments had been made to the doors of tho main drain floodgates, which were now closing much better than previously. In dealing with the condition of the diagonal drain floodgates as complained of by Mr. F. S. Easton, the foreman stated that ho had frequently examined these gates at low tides, high tides, and exceptionally high tides, during the past two months, and as the result of these inspections had no hesitation in stating that the gates -were at least 90 per cent, efficient when seen. An extraordinarily good test of tho efficiency of the gates occurred on Monday, November 28, when during tho high, gale and spring tide thero was ten feet of water on the river side of the gates, while on the inside of tho gates there was a depth of only 15 inches on the foundation platform. This in spito of the fact that there.was a small leak in each of the two bottom doors, probably caused by a small chip out of the sills into which the doors fit when closed. The foreman added that these doors work well, providing no flood debris gets jammed in them when closing. In the event of a flood the efficiency of the drain itself would be destroyed by the willow trees growing in the drain. A further letter from Mr. F. -S. Easton in reference to the Press Tcport of 'matters relating to the diagonal drain-and floodgates as mentioned in a letter from- Messrs. Tnnes and Oakley, and discussed at the last meeting, was read and-received.

At-the.conclusion of the meeting the chairman, in. view of tho fact that this was tho last meeting before the holidays, extended seasonal greetings to members and nlso to the Press. The good wishes were duly Tcciprocatcd. Foxton Rent Case In the minor civil action, F. S. Eatsoii v. S.
