Labour Lord Attacks Samoan Administration

CURT REPLY BY BRITISH MINISTER

United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Friday, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 9.

In the House of Lords Viscount Ponsonby (a former Labour Minister) asked whether the Government through the League Mandate Commission would satisfy itself that tho New Zealand mandate over Samoa was being administered with due regard to tho interests of the Samoans. Lord Ponsonby said there was grave apprehension in Samoa that thero might be a recurrence of tho events of 1929. There was also grave discontent with tho Mandatory Government.

Lord Strathcona, replying, said the Samoa mandate was entrusted under tho Versailles Treaty to the New Zealand Government. The British Government had no right nor desire to interfere. When the petition v'as received in 1931 alleging certain difficulties the Government raturned it and pointed out that it was solely a matter for New Zealand. Discussion on the subject by tho British Parliament was therefore undesirable.
