West End School

ANNUAL PICNIC AT ESPLANADE

The annual picnic of the West End School was held yesterday at the Esplanade and resulted in a highly successful outing for the pupils. Despite the high wind which sprang up in tho morning, the weather was sufficiently favourable to make tho function enjoyablo for all. A plentitude of lolly scrambles, ice creams and games made the day a particularly happy one for the juvenile picnickers, while after lunch a complete sports programme for the scholars was held. Somo excellent running was seen, particularly in the championship events for the Herbert Smith Trust trophies, which were won by Albert Leader and Rene Penketh.

Much credit is due to the headmaster (Mr. H. W. Jackson) and his staff for the organising of the picnic. They were afforded material assistance by a ladies committee, Mcsdames G. Tremaine, H. Connop and A. Beattie, who conducted a sweets stall, and by Messrs A. Penketh, H. Connop and B, Hands, who assisted with the sports programme. The winners of the various races were as follow:
