Garrison Band

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of tho management committee of tho Palmerston North Garrison Band was held on Wednesday evening. Colonel J. 11. Whyte presided and others present were Messrs. Oakley, Creighton, Pike, Middlemiss, Shackloton, Ilaybittlc, Cowlishaw and Winks. Apologies for absence wore received from Messrs. J. A. Nash, M.P., Kells, Cope, Wilson, Short, and Captain McCaskill. Tho manager of the junior band at the Napier contest (Mr. F. J. Oakley) reported that the band had put up very, meritorious performances both in the quickstep and test selection, winning tho first prize of £lO in each. Both performances were of outstanding merit and reflected the greatest credit on tho conductor, Mr. Pike, and DrumMajor Dennison, as well as the individual members of tho band, which received many congratulations. Each member of tho band had conducted himself in a most exemplary manner, and it had been a pleasure to act as manager. The conductor was to be congratulated upon his fine tuition and discipline, which was responsible for tho happy state oE affairs. Tho expenses of the band amounted to £ls 5s 10 d.

A letter was received from Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., congratulating the junior band upon its success and advising that tho community sings would start some time in March. Tho chairman congratulated the conductor upon tho success of tho junior band and, in expressing the committee’s appreciation, eulogised tho work of the conductor. Mr. Pike, in reply, paid a tributo to the excellent services of Mr. Oakley as manager. Owing to his leaving the district for some time, Mr. D. Dennison, drummajor, forwarded his resignation, ft was decided that the resignation should not be accepted, but that Mr. Dennison be granted six months’ ieave of absence and that ho bo forwarded n letter of appreciation of his work as drummajor at tho Napier contest. Warm appreciation was voiced of the action of Mr. Oakley and of the social committee in donating £1 Is and £3 >3s respectively for tho purchase of medals for the junior baud. . Authority was given for the purchase of a side drum, and it was decided to set up a committee to raise funds for now instruments.

The United Friendly Societies wrote conveying their thanks to the band for its attendance at their annual picnic. , It was resolved that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mrs. E. Martin, of Carroll street, for a donation.
