Women's Institutes

LINTON

Aij the February meeting of the Linton. Women’s Institute last Wednesday Mrs. J. Nash presided over a fair attendance of members and several visitors. Miss Bradfield, of Palmorston North, gavo a very interesting lecture on gardening, which was fully appreciated. A dainty afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Mrs. Ballinger, Mrs. C. and E. Crawford, and Miss Nolan. The afternoon took tho form of a flower show, and although being an off-season, the entries wero wonderful. Mrs. and Miss B'radfiold had quite a busy time judging tho exhibits. The prize-winners were: Best decorated va'so, Mrs. C. Crawford 1, Mrs. Moyes 2; best docorated bowl, Mrs. C. Crawford 1; best decorated table, Mrs. Nash 1, Miss I. Bix 2; cut flowers, dahlias, Mrs. Russell 1 and 2; cosmeas, school exhibit 1, Mrs.-D. Currin 2; roses, Mrs Romley 1; marigolds, Miss E. Young 1 and 3, Mrs. Russell 2; variety, Mrs. Romley 1, Mrs. Russell 2; pansies, Mrs Romley 1, Miss V. Sutherland 2; posy, Mrs. A. Currin 1; button-hole, Mrs. Romley 1; basket, Mrs. L. Craw (this entry being’ tho best exhibit of tbo show); best collection of vegetables, Mrs. L. Craw 1, Mrs. Moyes 2, Miss V. Sutherland 3. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. and Miss Bradfiold. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

HALCOMBE

There was a fair attendance at the February meeting of the Halcombe W.I. held in the hall on Thursday, Mrs Vile presiding. Before commencing the business of tho meeting motion’s of sympathy with Mesdames Ive, Douglas, Williams and McLennan respectively were passed in tho usual way. There wero many nicely mado raffia articles entered for the points prize competition, Mrs. L. Davies socuring first prize and Miss Morrit second; tho junior competition being won by Esmo Fields. Two small competitions during the afternoon caused much amusement, Miss Mavis Anderson and Miss Linda ■Managh proving the winners. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. L. Davies, Miss C. Wishnowsky and Miss F. : Johnski. A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close by tho singing of the National Anthem.
