Flanged Pipe Union
A type of pipe union in which the end of the pipe is flanged out instead of having a nipple soldered or pressed on the end is common in American cars. Many people believe that a special tool is needed for making tho flange on the end of the pipe, but while one is available, it is a time-saver for the repair shop and not a necessity for the job. All that is necessary is a centre punch which will fit easily inside the pipe.
First cut off the old flange, square up the end of Ihu pipe, and then anneal it by heating red hot and quenching in cold water, unless the pipe is already soft. The union nut, which should bo a snug fit on the pipe, is then threaded on. The centre punch is then inserted into the end of the pipe, and worked around until the end is belled out so as to nearly reach the threads of the union nut. Tho belling-out should be kept as even as possible, but it will not bo possible to get. anything approaching the correct form of the flange. The pipe may then bo annealed again, and on the union being screwed up tightly, it will be found that a perfect fitting flange will be produced. This form of pipe union is quite satisfactory provided tho nut fits snugly around the pipe to support it, and the pipe is net so short and direct as to receive heavy strain from vibration.
