A notice should be put in the paper warning people that anvono found with taps running would be "prosecuted, Cr. Curran, senr., pointed out that with a one-inch main the half-inch pipes leading off it took a great 1 deal of the pressure. Cr. Thwaites: The property in question is outside tho borough boundary and if the borough incurred expenditure to increase the supply there was always the risk that the occupier had the option of driving an artesian bore and then not requiring a supply from the borough. Cr. Mason stated that some of the stock owners supplied by this main were responsible as they left the taps running. Tho Mayor: All stock owners should have ball-cocks fitted to their supply.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the waterworks committee for attention. Mr. H. M. At a committee meeting of the Shannon Bowling Club held on Thursday evening matters relating to the opening of the season were discussed and invitations were received from Northern, Fox ton, Takaro and Palmerston North. It was decided to open the season on Saturday, October 28, and that all neighbouring’clubs be invited as well as those of Palmerston North. A letter was read from the secretary of the Palmerston North Club suggesting alterations in the method of holding the Easter tournament and asking the Shannon Chib for its opinion of. the suggestions mentioned.

The committee decided that owing to lack of information supplied, it was unable to support the suggested method. A great deal of work had been done on tho .green and there was every likelihood of the playing conditions being vastly improved on those of last year. Genera!.

The Shannon Cricket Club members have been hard at work preparing thengrounds for the coming season and they expect to field a, team equal to any in the district. Although the tennis season has not yet officially opened, players in large numbers are taking advantage of the fine weather and at limes the courts are crowded. It would appear that tennis this year will be on the boom in Shannon and no doubt there will bo a record crowd at the opening of tho season next Saturday. , , Rainfall for the month of September was about the average of 269 points, most of which, however, fell on one day, tho rest being spread over the month in light showers. A few frosts towards the end of the month made one realise that winter conditions could still make things unpleasant for the lovers of summertime. , ... During last week the school was visited by the department’s medical officer, Dr. Bakewell, and a thorough examination was made of all pupils from the infants upwards. Dr. Bakewell had not visited Shannon for some years, the visits in the meantime being paid by another medical officer. She reported that she could not help noticing the very marked improvement in the children physically, mentally and in general appearance. It was most gratifying to see that such a change was taking place. She also remarked on tho improved conditions of the school grounds, buildings, and of the town itself.
