“The Iron Stair” Appears On Double Feature Bill
FINE CAST OF PLAYERS IN A SPLENDID ENGLISH STORY
An interesting trick of fate is turned to good account in the story of ‘ ‘ The Iron Stair, ’ ’ a new British picture which will begin at the Kosy on October 25 with “CrossFire. ’ ’
In this picture, the fact that twin brothers, George and Geoffrey Gale, can hardly be recognised apart, is the causo of the wrong brother being sent meal and affords an exciting climax to the tor prison. As if in retribution for the injustice, this likeness is also the means of ultimately clearing his name. The manner in which this is brought about is very ingeniously contrived, film.
Henry Kendall plays the part of each of tho twin brothers —George and Geoffrey Gale—and succeeds in the dual role remarkably well. This is no easy task, for two separate and distinct characters have to be drawn by the actor, while the facial characteristics remain tho same.
Although Henry Kendall is the star, an excellent performance is given by Michael Hogan as an Irish barrister who looks after the estate. In. fact, all the feature roles are well played Michael Sherbrooke as an excitable Jewish moneylender; Dorothy Boyd us Eve Marshall, cousin to the twin brothers; and Steffi. Buna as Elsa Dalmond, a fiery little sweetheart of George Gale.
As a filial touch to his boxing lessons, Clark Gable paid a visit to Jimmy MeLarins, world’s welterweight champion at the latter’s quarters at the Olympic Auditorium. The star was immediately mobbed by newspaper photographers and newsreel cameramen trying to get a picture of him meeting the fighter. Gable will play a boxing champion in a forthcoming picture with Joan Crawford. <s> <s> <•> <•> Alison Skipworth appeared in twenty consecutive failures on the New York stage. <*><s>•€> Polly Moran confesses to a weakness for good old melodrama. ’Tis said that she always weeps loudly when the heroine and her poor “chec-ild” are being persecuted.
