Successful Concert and Dance at Whakarongo
A most successful concert and dance organised by members of the WJiukarongo Women’s Institute was lield in the Whakarongo hall on Friday evening providing keen, enjoyment for an enthusiastic audience. The. president of the institute (Mrs. J. A. McLeavey) presided and after proceedings had opened with the singing of the National Anthem, extended a cordial welcome to all present. An excellent programme had been arranged with a pleasing variety of vocal, elocutionary, dancing and dramatic items, the reception of which left no doubt as to the appreciation of the audience. Miss .Doreen Saunders contributed clever characterisations and musical monologues; Mr. Tabor entertained with humorous songs, and was associated with Mrs. Tabor in amusing sketches and with Miss Saunders in vocal duets; Misses June Scott, Vera Oliver, Molly O’Brien and Keitha Scales delighted with an Irish reel to music supplied by Piper Jock McKenzie; Miss June Scott was vociferously applauded for her dancing of a Sheantriubhs, and Miss Melva Day’s sweet voice was heard to advantage in charming songs. All the performers were oncored. Tko programme concluded with the presentation of the one-act play of '‘Lonesome Like” by Linton members, the winning team in the recent drama festival. The players (Mcsdames Gretton and Coker, Messrs R. ..and A. Grotton) held the audience throughout and received a well deserved tribute at the conclusion. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the performers on the call of Mrs. McLeavey and carried by acclamation. Miss Grant conveyed greetings from the Provincial Federation and complimented the Institute on the initiative and courage they were showing in thenactivities. A most appetising suppci was served, after which the kadi was cleared and dancing was indulged in o lively music supplied by Messrs Spencer (piano) and Gould (violin). Mr 'j. A. McLeavey was a most efficient M.C. and kept the programme of oldtime and modern dances proceeding merrily. Novelty dances added to the fan the prizes for which were donated bv Mrs. Watson. The prize winners were Miss C. Mills and Mr. H. Crawford'(Monte Carlo); Miss Jonson and m.r. H. Gore (lucky spot).
