PERSONALITIES
A record to be proud of has been achieved by Mr. H. B. Tucker, oi Tucker’s Club hotel, Palmerston North, this year. On June 5 last he received the fiftieth annual licence since he commenced business in New Zealand and to-day Mr, Tucker will attain the sixtieth year since he learnt the trade in Devonshire, England. On Sunday Mr. Tucker will reach his 7Gth. birthday and will be able to look back over a Joyear period since he established the well-known hotel in the city.
Mr. W. H. Brown, ol: Palmerston North, has returned after a health recruiting holiday in Hawke s Bay.
Guests at the Hotel Imperial include Mr. L. McKenzie (Waipawa), Miss McKenzie (Waipawa), Mr. F. Deverell (Auckland), Mr. J. Malinc (Auckland).
Mrs. Hu line, the well-known producer, is at present iu Palmerston North in connection with the production ot ‘‘A Country Girl” which is to be staged during Show week by the Palmerston North Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.
Mr. H. M. Oram, of Palmerston North, who has been abroad for some months, is expected to return just before Christmas. He recently motored from London-'.to Edinburgh in company with Dr. H. J. Durward, formerly of Palmerston North.
Private advice has been received in Wellington that Mr. Julian Poster, formerly American Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, has been appointed Trade Commissioner ot Singapore. Mr. and Mrs. Poster will sail from San Francisco for Singapore on October 20.
The death is reported by a Press Association message from Ashburton, at the age of SO years, of Mr. William Edwin Dolma-n, a member of the Ashburton Fire Brigade for 57 years, for the greater part of the time as engineer and caretaker till his retirement. He was connected with the Ashburton Rifle Volunteers and rose from the rank of sergeant-major to major.
Mr. H. W. Wilson, town clerk of Northcotc, has decided to retire at the cud of the year. He has created a record by serving local bodies for 55 successive years. At the age of IS he entered the town clerk's office at Dunedin as a cadet, and from 1900 to 1920 he was town clerk at Auckland. Mr. Wilson has held his present position since 1920. The previous record for length, of service with local bodies was held by Air. J. J. Woods, of Lawrence.
