Fire Engine Collides With Light Motor Lorry
NOBODY INJURED IN CORNER SMASH BRIGADE’S FIRST ACCIDENT OVER A TWENTY-YEAR PERIOD
Whilst proceeding to answer a call lo a chimney lire yesterday morning the Palmerston North Fire Brigade experienced the first accident to one of its machines in 20 years. The new eight-cylinder Fordson fire engine, when turning into Alain street from Andrew Young street, collided at the Intersection with a light motor loriy, driven by Air. W. Procter, of the city. Fortunately, nobody was injured and little damage was sustained by cithei vehicle. Air. Procter was driving along Alain street towards the Square when the motor with, its crew, answering the alarm at 11.30 a.m., came round the corner. A collision was inevitable and the light lorry was capsized by the impact. Struck a glancing blow on the left, wheel it turned over slowly, the mudguard being buckled, the front bumper bent, the glass in a portion of the cab smashing and some woodwork being split. The driver escaped unhurt andthe lorry was soon righted, proceeding under its own power. The men on the fire engine, . which had to continue at once on its journey to the scene of the alarm, also escaped although Palmerston North’s lates acquisition to its fire fighting fleet su fered a dented mudguard and damage to one of the tyres.
