Boxing in Brisbane
INTER-COLONIAL AMATEURS. BRISBANE, Oct. 4. The contests between the Australian and New Zealand boxing champions arc now in progress. Taking advantage of his height and reach AV. Burns (11.21), the Australian title holder in the 11.(5 division, dealt out punishment to 11. Neale (11.41) but the stocky New Zealander fought back gamely and was full of light at the end. Though conceding more than 1A stone the Australian I. Harley (12.11) was more than a match for IX Lindsay (13.10) giving Australia the decision and a lead of four matches to two at the end of tho first night. H. Cooper (7.5) outpointed IV. McKay (7.121) in four vigorous rounds. AV. Hawes (8.12) defeated E. Hattam (9.9). Hawes, with a crouching attitude and a body attack at long range, disconcerted the Australian. It was interesting and exciting when L. Cook- (9.9), the Australian titleholder in the 9-stone division met the New Zealand Olympic representative, R. Purdic (9.6). The Australian was just too strong and gained a points decision after four rounds of hard punching. Giving easily the best exhibition of boxing thus far, AV. Purdie (9.111) clearly outpointed ,T. Murray (9.9) in the 10.7 division. Purdie was consistently applauded for his clean, clover boxing. The second series of matches takes place on Thursday evening.
