Performing Rights Society Wins Appeal Case
IMPORTANT DECISION AT HOME

The Appeal Court held that tho reproduction of music by means of wireless loud-speakers in hotels and cafes is an infringement of copyright, and affects over 80,000 establishments and the trade contemplates an appeal to tho House of Lords.
The Performing Rights Society recently proposed a sliding scale of license fees, ranging from. £1 to £25, the highest fees being payable by cafes using wireless for dancing. The suggested fees would involve £50,000 annually. Position in Australia RECOMMENDATIONS BY ROYAL COMMISSION. Received Oct. 5, 11.30 p.m. CANBERRA, Oct. 5. It is understood ‘ that the Federal Government does not intend to give effect to tho suggestions of the recont Royal Commission on performing rights. Mr Latham (Attorney-General) informed a questioner in tho House of Representatives that tho commission’s recommendations raised difficult legal and practical question; consequently the Government was endeavouring to bring about an agreement between the parties concerned —tho Australian Performing Rights Association and the broadcasting companies and various musical organisations —respecting copyrights.
