Heavy Wind Makes Good Scoring Difficult

The c curse was in good order and while the conditions provided a splendid test of golf, the players obviously tired under the strain imposed by the stron g south-westerly wind with which they had to contend.

Nash, who /finished square with /the “Colonel,” the count back favoured the Napier pair for second prize. The Championship Games. There was some very fine golf in the championship games and in two of those'played in the afternoon, the issue was in doubt until the rounda had been nearly completed.

Second Round Matches. Aliss Kay beat Airs. Ekstedt in the morning and she met Airs. Kota in the second round, Airs. Rota having eliminated Airs. Jennings. The feature of the game between the Australian titleholder and Airs. Rota was the tremendous driving by both players. Aliss Kay is acknowledged to be one of the longest drivers in New Zealand or Australia, yet Airs. Kota was holding her from her tees and at times it was Aliss Kay who had to play the first second. Aliss Kay, however, was much too good through the greens and sho won fairly easily after an interesting match. The first hole was halved and the driving duel was on at the second where both put (heir tee shots over the cross bunker. Airs. Kota chipped to tho back of the green and Aliss Kay followed with one 15 feet short of the pin. Playing from tho slope, Airs. Kota rimed the cup, the ball staying out. Aliss Kay ran hers down for a birdie three and a win. The third was halved in easy s’s arid the fourth in 3’s. Playing to the fourth, Aliss Kay was on from the tee, but out to the right. Airs. Kota caught the bunker, but chipped on and ran down a 10-footcr for the half.

They were nicely on the green in 3’s at Strang’s, but Aliss Kay laid her approach putt dead for an easy 5. Airs. Kota failed with her approach putt and took 0 to bo 2 clown. She had outdriven the champion, who was one over 4’s at the third and fifth. The next three holes were halved and Aliss Kay increased her lead to 3 at the ninth where she chipped from the rough to the right and ran down a 12-footer for the win in 3. Aliss Kota had found the blinker from the tee and required 3 to Teach the green. Aliss Kay had increased her lead to 5 up at Ti Ti’s and she clinched the match with a birdie 3 at Kraal, where long drives were followed by short approaches to the green. Airs. Rota was just on, but Aliss Kay was about 10 feet from, the pin. Airs. Kota was short with her putt, but Aliss Kay, -with a glance at the line, ran the putt down to finish the match. She meets Aliss Guy this morning.

The other game in the top half of the draw was that between Aliss Al. Guy (Aranawatu) and Aliss E. Hanson (Hcretaunga), and it proved a great tussle, Aliss Guy winning with a per-, feet 4 on the eighteenth green. The first two holes were halved and Aliss Guy then took the next three in a row with good golf. Aliss Hanson recovered her grip on the game with a perfect 4 into the wind at the sixth (bogey 5). Aliss Guy was down in scratch figures, but that was not good enough and her lead had been reduced to 2 up. The. seventh was halved in scratch figure?, mut Aliss Hanson won the next two with 3’s to 4’s and they were again square at the turn. Aliss Hanson had to play her second from loug grass at the tenth and Aliss Guy. making no mistakes, was 1 up. 'The eleventh was halved, but the Herctaunga player rattled down a long putt for a 2 at Lagoon Hill. Ti Ti’s was w r on by Aliss Guy, who laid a long approach dead. Aliss Hanson had played two nice woods, but her third drifted into a bunker. Both approaches were off the line a bit going to Kraal, Aliss Guy being short and Aliss Hanson pin high in the bunker. Aliss Guy approached to within 14 feet of the pin and ran down the putt for a win in 4 to 5. She was 2 up with 4 holes to play, but she failed to get her tec shot away at Barraud’s and Miss Hanson, who was 4 feet away from the pin with her third, own with an easy 5. The sixteenth was slap into tho wind and Aliss Hanson approached to the green and ran down a 12-footer for a win with a birdie 4. They were square with two holes to play. The next was halved in 4. Going to the home hole, the drives were well down the fairway. Aliss Guy was nicely on with her second, but Aliss Hanson failed to reach ! the green from a cuppy lie, and Miss Guy won the hole with a nice 4 to 5 and the match, 1 up. Mrs. D. Stout, of Hcretaunga, was much too steady for Aliss I. Seifert, the game ending on the fourteenth green, the Feilding player having failed to reproduce, the form she showed in tho morning when she defeated Airs. Collinson 2 and 1. Airs. Stout took some time to settle down to her game, but once she did, she played well down to her handicap. At the turn she held the commanding lead of 3 up and she went on to clinch the match 5 and 4. Aliss Seifert, who is practically a newcomer to the game, played good golf coming in, but the match was always in Airs. Stout’s keeping. Aliss Bessie Gaisford and Aliss C. Wilson, of Bulls, figured in the other championship match, and Aliss Wilson took Aliss Gaisford to the seventeenth green before finality was reached. It was level pegging until after the seventh, but Aliss Gaisford found bunk-, ers at the eighth and ninth and was 2 down at the turn. She had evened the score at Land’s End and was 1 up after Ti Ti’s. From that on Aliss Wilson fought doggedly and did well to keep the game alive as long as she did. The position was all square playing to the eighth. Aliss'Gaisford’s tee shot landed in a bunker and she conceded the hole.. At the ninth she found herself in another and took 4. Aliss Wilson was making few mistakes and a tee shot to the green and 2 putts gave her a lead of 2 at the turn. Aliss Wilson failed to find the green with her

second at the tenth and Aliss Gaisford, who played a safo approach from tho left of the fairway, won in 4to 5. She recorded a nice 5 to 6 at Land’s End and they were square. The twelfth was halved in easy 4’s, but at Ti Ti’s, where Aliss AVilson topped her drive into the rough, Aliss Gaisford played two magnificent woods to the edge of the green, and an easy 5 made her 1 up with 5 to play. Both drove well at Barraud’s. Aliss Wilson’s second was short and Aliss Gaisford’s just through the green, the hole being halved in 5. Aliss Gaisford was just short of tho green with, her second at the sixteenth, which she won in 5 to G to become dormy two. Aliss Gaisford covered the pin with a very long drive at the seventeenth, the ball finishing well past the bunker. Aliss Wilson was past the pin with her approach and Aliss Gaisford short, and the hole was halved in 4’s, Aliss Gaisford winning 2 and 1. Her opponent in the semi-final will be Airs. Stout. Surprise Of The Day. One of the surprises of the day was the defeat of Airs. H. C. Colliuson by the young Feilding player, Aliss I. Seifert. Airs. Colliuson had established a lead of two with eight holes played but Aliss Seifert then took charge and had squared the match again at Lagoon Hill. At Barraud’s she had established a lead of 2 up with three to play. Airs. Collinson got one back at the sixteenth, where she was down in an easy 5, Miss Seifert having found a bunker. Aliss Seifert was I up and the match ended on the seventeenth green, where Mrs. Collinson required three putts after they had reached the green with their seconds. DRAW FOR TO-DAY.
