The Public Services’ organising committee has spared no effort in tho endeavour to make this day one to be remembered and talked about, and without doubt the public of Palmerston North will derive a great amount of enjoyment watching the festivities arranged. The main event of the day will of course be the staging of the unique contest between the Toad rollers of the Kairanga County, the Palmerston North City Council and an aeroplane. Speculation will be rife in regard to the respective chances of these speedy little machines in their dash for victory. Handicapping in this event is causing a great deal of concern. Tho other major event of the day, the bicycle handicap ‘‘round the Square,’’ should prove a big draw for tho younger folk and it is anticipated that there will be a big entry in this contest. In addition to the fore going there will be other equally entertaining functions, including a stall ou Broadway and a casino of fun located in the Square. Further details of this effort on behalf of the Public Services Queen will bo announced in to-morrow’s “Times.” NOTES. To-night at the Opera House a popular programme will be presented. This has been arranged by the various committees and will comprise humorous, dramatic and musical numbers contributed by the leading artists of the city. The Mayor will present the queen candidates to the audience and will have some interesting announcements to make relating to the carnival. At a meeting of tho executive committee, very encouraging reports from the various committees were received. It is hoped to indicate the position of tho candidates on Saturday by means of a flag shown from the band rotunda in tho Square. The committees have nlaney novel methods of raising money for votes for their queens and the public are assured of considerable entertainment during the period of the carnival. To raise the sum of £2500 might at first appear hard to achieve, but the collective enthusiasm of the hundreds taking part in the effort promises a great measure of success. Street days, garden parties, card parties, dances, tournaments, concerts, badge day, and other divertissements to be promoted are going to make tho period of the carnival something to remember, and tho public can be relied upon for their assistance for this most worthy causo —the alleviation of distress in the city.
