Public Introduced To Carnival Queens

ENTERTAINMENT AT OPERA HOUSE Palmerston North’s queen carnival has commenced and, what is more, is well under way. Citizens from far and near gathered list evening to meet the various candidate's at the Opera House and the theatro was well Idled for the occasion, h splendid programme being contributed by well-known local artists.

The Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) presented tho queens, Misses M. Nathan, E. Boon, J. Barnett, K. Richards and J. Russell, stating that all were striving not for personal gain but to assist in the general effort to raise funds for the relief of the unemployed of the city. Mr. Mansford paid a tribute to the work performed by Mr. P, M. Larcomb, who for a lengthy period had performed yeoman service as secretary to the local committee and had handled some thousands of pounds and attended to a vast amount of detail. There had been three clothes drives, while for two and a half years the clothes and food depots had been maintained. Other depots were also being conducted to assist the unemployed and the cost had been over £IOO weekly. Palmerston North was now conducting a queen'carnival to raiso further funds, Mr. Mansford added, and in this regard the Rotary Club had to be thanked for tho initial work. He felt sure that in its effort to raise £2500 the city would prove second to none amongst the New Zealand towns. Items were contributed by Fred Gcdson’s orchestra, Mr. J. Davidson (recitations), Mr. Blair Tennent (songs), Miss June Scott (Spanish dance), Jlr. S. W. Olliver (humour), Miss Doherty (songs), Miss Saunders (recitations), Miss Leamy (pianoforte), Mr. R. Luke (humour), Mr. A. G. Brown (songs), Mr. B. Eising (recitations), Miss Jean Redd (toe dances), Miss Kneebone (songs), Mr. W. Corke (humour). The Mayor expressed thanks to Mr. Olliver for acting as stage manager, Messrs Andrews and Sons for stage furnishings and to the public for its support.
