A brilliant exhibition of doubles tennis by Crawford and McGrath against Malfroy and Sturt was afforded enthusiasts who filled the stands at Stanley street courts to capacity. Although the Australians were at no time in serious straits, they were extended to five sets, finally winning 6—4, 2 —6, 6 —l, 4—o, o—2. 'ln a singles match McGrath beat Malfroy o—2,0 —2, 6 —2. “It was a generous gesture on the part of our distinguished visitors to consent to play these matches in Auckland, ” said the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Hutchison) in extending an official welcome. Mr. P. Harrison, president or the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, presented Mrs. Crawford with a greenstone pen stand and Crawford and McGrath each with a carved Maori cigarette casket. Although scarcely at the top of their form after their strenuous European and American tour and the sea voyage, the Australian pair showed frequent flashes of individual and combined brilliance, which won enthusiastic applause from the gallery. The New Zealanders. acquitted themselves weli under the circumstances, Malfroy particularly playing a magnificent game and reproducing the doubles form which gained for him the Dominion’s men’s and combined doubles titles at the last championships. “It tv as a most enjoyable match,” said Crawford after the contest. “The New Zealanders, especially Malfroy, gave a fine exhibition of the doubles game.”
