Dunedin Guineas Captured By the Masquerader
BAIN SPOILS PROMISING OPENING WINGATUI, Oct. 7. In beautiful weather tho second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting was opened at Wingatui to-day, but conditions became overcast after the first race and rain commenced to fall after the third race. Tho attendance was good and the track firm but dead. In the second principal event, tho RanfurJy Handicap, was won with great staying power by Polydora. At the far turn she ran into fourth place behind Irish Lancer, Palantua and Guarantee. Half-way up the straight she made a line run to catch Irish Lancer and win well by two lengths. Irish Lancer went a good .race, but Palantua was settled by tho pace set, by Guarantee. The winner's effort is good in view of the New Zealand Cup.
The .Dunedin Guineas was won all the way by Tho Masquerader. Silvox came along but made a late run in the last, furlong and tho Limond gelding hung on well to win by three-quarters of a length. Fracas was his nearest attendant all the way, but stopped in tho run home. Silvox could have come sooner. A. F. Ellis lias been suspended for two months for crossing with Control in the McLean Stakes in the first day's racing.
