Manawatu County

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, Or. W. E. Barber (chairman) presiding. There wore also present Crs. N. Moreom, J. Boyce, 13. W. Reid, W. E. i’carce and J. H. Ferret t. The following correspondence was dealt with:—

From the Public Works Department setting out that the Highways Board was unable to find moro than the statutory subsidy of £3 for £1 towards the cost of maintenance of the main highway through Foxton. Tho hoard, however, approved of the suggestion of the Manawatu county to take over the maintenance of the boundary road along Union street and desired to know if the suggestion could be given effect to. —The council decided that the matter was one for the Foxton Borough Council to move in.

From the Department of Health forwarding Gazette notice regarding the vesting of the control of the Rongotea and Sanson cemeteries in the Manawatu County Council.-—Received.

From the Transport Department forwarding copy of amendments to motor vehicle regulations, 1933. —Received.

From the Unemployment Board forwarding particulars of arrangements under which unemployed may be employed by fanners for the eradication of ragwort. —Received. From the Public Works Department requesting proposals for approval regarding the sealing of the main road through Rongotea township.—lt was decided to make a grant of £BS towards the cost of the work and to suggest that the sealing be postponed until next summer owing to the lateness of the season. From the Ohakca School Committee requesting a grant of two loads of metal to assist the school committee in certain concrete work to be undertaken about the school grounds.—Agreed to. From Mr. M. Creavcn, Taikorea, drawing attention to tho condition of Fyke’s road.—Referred to the engineer for attention. From Mr. G. A. Hobbs, Foxton, drawing attention to the condition of Purcell street which, ho stated, could not be used with safety after dark.— Referred back to the writer recommending that he approach the Foxton Borough Council. County Finances. Tho treasurer reported on the county finances as follows: —County fund account, debit, £13,530 7s 2d; loan account, credit, £2l-11 18s sd. The amounts available for expenditure in the several ridings wero stated to be as follow:—Sandon, £BB Os Gd; Mt. Stewart, £7B 3s Id; Waitohi, £lO4 IGs 2d; Rongotea, £167, 13s 2d; Carnarvon, £lO3 ISs 9cl; Kawa Kawa, £2<l 3s Gd; Awaliou, £278 11s 9d. Rate Collector’s Report. The county rate collector reported that the demands for current rates were posted in September and to date the amount of £787 2s Gd had been collected. The amount of arrears since April 1 was £l3lO 7s Id. A number of payments on account have been promised.—Received. Engineer’s Report, The county engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported as follows: — Main highways: All metalled surfaced main highways have been graded periodically. The Whirokino road has been patched with metal and corners have been super-elevated. Metal patching has been carried out on the FoxtonShannon and Foxton Beach roads. The shoulders of the Himatangi-Foxton bitumen road are being built up with metal as tho opportunity occurs. Surface metal has been spread on the Hima-tangi-Rangiotu road. Dumps are being prepared for metal to be used for tho bitumenising of this road. A start has been made with the delivery of metal for this purpose, 150 cubic yards being delivered to date. Six extra men have been engaged for this work . A portion of the Himatangi-Sanson highway has been patched, also the Eongotea-Longburn road. Corners ou the Tangimonna road have been sloped up and the surplus metal binded with clay. The bitumenous surface of ihe Sanson-Awahuri road has been patched with cold emulsified bitumen and metal chips. The portion of the FeildingAwahuri road from Stewart’s line to Awahuri is being patched with metal from the Oroua river. Ridings. Mt. Stewart: Surface metal from Gray’s creek has been spread on Lee’s line from end to end. Approximately 120 cubic yards of metal has been quarried in the Mt. Stewart pit and spread on the Mt. Stewart-Halcombe road. Guard rails have been erected at Nearu’s bridge on Rakehou road. Several roads have been graded by the power grader. Sandon: Drainage work has been carried out on Kakariki road and an old wooden culvert has been replaced with 9-inch concrete pipes. Surface metal has been spread on Ohakea road.

All roads have been graded and drainage matters have been attended to on Fagan’s line.

Waitohi: Surface metal has been spread on Rowe’s line and several roads have been graded. The deck of one bridge on the Bank’s-Waitohi road has been repaired, and a portion of Tompkins’ lino has been patched. Rongotea: Tompkins’ line has been patched and surface metal has been spread. Several roads have been graded. A bridge on Banks’ line has been repaired. Kawa Kawa: Several roads have been graded with tho power grader. A portion of Kellow’s lino has been patched and sand blows on tho lower portion of this road aro being attended to. Repairs have been made to culverts on Couper’s lino and Taikorea road. Carnarvon: A portion of Rosina line has beea cut out with the power grader and other roads have been surface graded. The grass sides of Lake and Koputaru roads have been cut out with the power grader and the road surfaces arc now being patched. The roads in Taugimoana township arc being similarly treated. Awahou: Metal patching has been undertaken on Spring’s, River and Motuiti roads. Grading has been carried out on several roads and drainage matters and culverts have been attended to on Poplar and Kari Kari roads. — Received.
