Thanks: The thanks of the Centre are due to Mr. and Mrs. McLeod for their help at carnivals, Mr. N. I. Nielsen for auditing, and to the delegates and all others who helped during the last season. In conclusion it is hoped that with the co-opcration of delegates and swimmers generally, the coming season, which will be a very heavy one owing to having the junior and intermediate New Zealand championships on January 19, 20 and 22 next, will be a most successful one. TERRACE END The fourth annual report of the Terraco End Swimming Club states, interalia: — Finance: The financial statement shows a credit balance of £3 18s 7cl as against £6 19s 7d last year. In accounting Tor the loss it must be remembered that it was necessary to procure two engraved silver cups and miniatures for men’s and ladies’ competitions at a cost of 3Gs 6d each for the cups and about 15s each for the miniatures. This year, however, miniatures only will have to be bought. Financial stringency and bad luck with the weather on club and carnival nights were other factors. It was also found necessary this year to replace the club’s stop-watch at a cost of £2 10s. Membership: The membership of the club is 112 as compared with 100 last season, but the amount derived from fees was less than last year owing to a considerable decrease in the senior men’s membership. Active senior members are urgently required and members are requested to enrol new swimmers to the town as members of the Terrace End Glub.
Carnivals: During February the big carnival was held. Owing to a slight shower of rain about 7.30 p.m. our gate was down about £3. However, in all other respects the carnival was most successful. The club was allotted the Manawatu Centre 100 yards girls’ intermediate championship. Only ono entry was received, this being from Miss P. iSporle who put up a centre record in covering the distance. The club was represented by swimmers at all the other city carnivals, (several competitors also made the trip to Feilding.
Life-saving: Two club teams were entered in the Weston Smith rose bowl competition, the A team coming second just three-quarters of a point behind Y.M.C.A. The B team was fourth, about II points from the winners. The personnel of the two teams was: A, 11. Pierard and R. Carter; B, Miss J. Hamilton and Miss D. Gibbs.
Championships: In the fourth year of its existence the Terrace End Club can claim a New Zealand champion among its members. “Pip” Pierard learned to swim as a member of the club and at the New Zealand championships held in Invercargill was successful m winning the junior boys’ 75 yards breast stroke title in the fine time of 64sec. C. Baigent also mado the trip for the free style event but, although he did his best ho found the company too strong. R. Carter was successful in winning the Manawatu Centre’s 50 yards backstroke championship, while S. Sapwell was third in the intermediate boys’ 100 yards. Glub nights: Club nights were con-
tinued on the same lines as previously. As a result of one of the club nights, the club was able to hand £3 Is lOd to the Manawatu Centre’s fund for sending a team to Invercargill. Tho Herbert Smith cups were again competed for, while tho club’s cups for men’s and ladies’ competitions were also inaugurated. The series resulted as follows:—Men’s cup, S. Sapwell; ladies’ cup, Miss Z. Robinson; boys’ cup, Cyril Baigent; girls’ cup, Mary Hamilton.
General: The Manawatu Centre executive is putting beforo the annual meeting of tho Centre a scheme for grading swimmers into A and B grades for the purpose of giving swimmers, both limit and scratch men, a better chance. It is also considering a scheme for reducing the number of carnivals and members are asked to give these matters their serious consideration. Thanks: The club desires to extend its usual vote 1 of thanks to the school committee for concessions to members; to Mr. O. Sporlc and Mrs. R. H. Fisher who took care of the two members on their long trip to Invercargill, and to all those ladies and gentlemen who have in any way helped the club during a very strenuous year, while to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur the club desires to say a very special “Thank you” for the many courtesies members have received at their hands.
