Tributes to Memory of Late Mr A. E. Meatyard

Prior to the commencement of business in tho Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court y-esterday morning tribute was paid to the memory- of tho late Mr A. E. Meaty-ard, a prominent member of the legal profession, whose death occurred during last week-end. Mr J. A. Grant, as president of the Palmerston North branch of the Law Society, feelingly referred to the loss sustained .through tho sudden passing of the deceased gentleman. Mr Meatyard had been one of the oldest members of the legal profession in Palmerston North, and a familiar figure in the city. All appreciated that ho had hekl a high regard for the etiquette and principles of tho profession, and lie had been held in tho highest respect. Within a week or so of his death deceased had been able to carry out his duties, and, in his SOth year, this spoke volumes for his ability and physical powers. His bearing, alert mentality- and model handwriting belied the fact that he had had more than 60 years of practice behind him. All, concluded Mr Grant, would join in expressing the deepest sympathy to his bereaved family-.

Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., also expressed his sympathy with the deceased’s relatives, adding that the late Mr Meatyard had been a link with the past. He had been an old-time articled clerk before tho days of the typewriter, when everything had to be engrossed and his bandwriting had been of a model kind. Ono of the oldest practitioners, deceased was ever courteous, painstaking and had had the highest sense of duty to ell.

All stood while tributes were paid to the memory of deceased, and the Court was adjourned for a brief period as a further mark of esteem.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, being of a private nature. Canon Woodward conducted a short service at the home and later at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs H. R. Cooper, B. J. Jacobs, A. M. Ongley, G. Tremaine, G. I. McGregor and M. Abraham, representing the Palmerston North branch of the Law Societv.
