Decline in Returns From Art Unions
STATEMENT BY MINISTER Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. A request for a share in tho proceeds of an art union to assist iu providing a fund with which to enable New Zealand art students to bo sent abroad to further their studies was made to the Minister of Internal Affairs to-day by a deputation from the Association of New Zealand Art Societies. It was stated that it was desired to award periodically a travelling scholarship tenablo in Europe and opon to New Zealanders who were students of fine arts and architecture. The cost was estimated at not less than £350 per annum. Dr, Carbery was tho spokesman. In tho coures of his reply, tho Minister said that somo time ago art unions were returning a profit of £17,000, but tho profits from the last few were something like £IO,OOO. The policy of the committee making allocations was directed with tho object of relieving as much as possible tho distress in the community and in keeping in. existence organisations and associations which operated to the benefit of tho community and which were suffering from the depression.
“We might be able to do something for you towards a scholarship for ono year,’’ he said, “but the establishment of an endowment 'in the present circumstances presents difficulties to me in making recommendations to my colleagues.’ ’ The Minister promised that the recommendations made to him would be placed before the committee responsible for the allocations.
