The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) prosidod over a meeting of the Carnival o.veeutivo committee hold this week, others present being Mesdames W. Aitchison and Edwards, Colonel J. H. Whyte, Messrs F. .1. Oakley, P. Larcomb, E. Wirasett, W. Robertson, J. P. McDavitt, L. Pasco?, H. Johansen, and C. V. Day (honorary organiser and secretary). Apologies .for absence were roceived from Messrs F. J. Nathan, W. S. Carter, and W. G-. Black. Arrangements for furthering the campaign, which is now gathering impetus, were discussed, .and some novel suggestions were advanced for winding up the programme, including a big gala in the city and an evening Monte Carlo at the Awapuni racecourse. It was reported that the organisation was in hand by various committees of such functions as gardon parties, “treasure hunt’* dances, and a movie ball. The secretary suggested that each committee should immediately notify what major events it contemplated, so that activities could be co-ordinated. He advocated four grand finishing days. They could start wtih a children’s party on the afternoon of Wed'uesday, November 8, and-finishing that day with a Monte Carlo at the Awapuni racecourse in the evening. The function at. the racecourse could be subdivided into sections under the control of various 'queen committcos. There could be .a cabaret in th'e kiosk, a bridge and card division under the main grandstand, a buffet supper, and competitions, The band could be in attendance, and dancing conducted on the lawn. There need bo only a nominal gate admission charge, and some novel features could be introduced,. Transport to the gala evening would, it was added, be a matter for arrangement. An attendance of 2000 peoplo was.anticipated at Awapuni that night. There was a possibility of the final four days’ carnival fixtures yielding a minimum 0f.£6.00.
Enlarging upon his proposals, Mr Day stated that the street area in front of the Opera House could'be enclosed on'the final three days, Thursday, Friday, and-Saturday,- for a. big Paddy’s Market,, with cabarets nightly in the Municipal Hall. Concerts could, be arranged at which each queen committee could present, a five .minutes’ tableau. Public voting competitions could be conducted on the popularity of these, The final action would be the execution of King Carnival. All activities would cease at midnight on the Saturday, with, all matters to be finalised on the following Tuesday afternoon, in order that, the coronation ceremony could take place that night. The programme tentatively outlined was approved. The offer by Mr Robertson of the services of the Hula Quintette for % concert toward the end of the carnival was accepted .'with thanks.
