The fi«t three furlongs were run in 66 l-osec, ai:c Caliente, who was kept up to her work, ■went right away in tho straight. She is carrying an improved appearance, and should perform well in the novice class at Avondale on Saturday. 'Another good effort the same morning at Takanini was that of Gay Sheila, who went fast over live furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec, the first two furlongs taking 2-1 2-ssec. She came fully nine stone, and finished very stoutlv, and her display would strengthen her position as favourite for the Avondalo Champion Hack Elate and Guineas. Tavern Knight and Cherry King also registered an excellent gallop, the former conceding weight and finishing a neck in front. Tho time was a tick better than that of GaySheila, but it was recorded much later in the morning, when the heavy dew j a evidence earlier had disappeared. V L. j. ELLIS RETURNS TO-DAY E J. Ellis is due at Auckland from Sydney to-day. He had planned to ■ride at the Avondale meeting on Saturday and Monday, but, in view of the suspension of A. E. Ellis and Gr.il.
