Women’s Institutes

MANGAWEKA Mrs Pairman presided over a good attendance at the October meeting of the Mangaweka W. 1., which included members of OhiDgaiti and TJtiku Institutes. Mrs Oulsnam and Mrs Kirkbv ■were appointed delegates to Turakina. A very interesting demonstration on making lamp shades was given by Mrs Worsfold, of Ohingaiti, and much enjoyed by members. A competition, best jar of marmalade, was w r on by Sirs Dickson, with Mrs Pairman and Mrs Hamilton second, and third respectively. Goods from the Blind Institute wore on sale, and a splendid assortment of children’s clothes was contributed for the Wanganui Mayor’s Belief Depot. Some enjoyable items were given by the singing circle, end members joined in community singing. Mrs Jarrett was thanked for presenting six papier macho flower vases to tho institute. Hostesses were Mesdames Rowley, Salt, Shaw and Scott. At the November meeting Mr Haythorne will give a gardening talk, and Mrs Haythorno a demonstration, of wreath making. The competition will bo six pikelets. TAIKOREA The October meeting of the 'l’aikorca W'.l. coincided with tho second birthday of the institute. Mrs It. C. Hill presided over about 20 members. A brief report of the group meeting which was held at Eongotea was given by Miss M. Smith. One new member was enrolled. The afternoon was spent in a very profitable and practical manner, each member bringing some form of needlework. An amusing fixture of tho afternoon was the paper-tearing competition, the winner being Miss It. Bailey. In the very near future a concert and dance will be held to commemorate the birthday of the institute. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames F. W. Print, D. Print, and Misses D. Stanton and I. Hchir, after which a pleasant afternoon was closed with the singing of tho National Antlicm.
