The Late Ir Henry Dewar
The late Mr Henry Dewar, of Aorangi, who passed away on Friday last, was a native of .Kinross, Fife* shire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand 51 years ago, arriving at Port Chalmers as a youth of 18 years of age. Soon after settling in the south he joined the Government service, remaining thus employed until the Australian gold rush which called him and others to the goldfields newly discovered, Returning to New Zealand, Mr Dewar Tejoined the Government service in the Railway Department, remaining in this service for close on 16 years. On his marriago he purchased the farm property at Aorangi from the local Maoris, carrying on farming until his untimely death last week. He took an interest in the Native race and his kindly ways won for him the deep friendship of tho local Maoris. His funeral bore eloquent testimony to the widespread respect in which he was held, relatives and friends marking their sympathy by personally attending tho obsequies and in the wealth of floral tributes which were received. These included wreaths from the Feiiding branch of the Women’s Division t£ the Farmers’ Union, the Dairy Farmers’ Union, of which Mr Dewar was a member of tho executive, the Kiwitea Lodge No. 7, and tho employees of Messrs Thos. Borthwick and Co., Feilding. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. P. Bickers (representing the Dairy Farmers’ Union), F. Usher (representing Kiwitea Lodge No. 7, and also the employees of Messrs Borthwick and Co.), M. Duric (representing tho Aorangi Maoris), E. A. McFarland, M. Lyons and H. Waugh.
