AVONDALE MEETING OPENS TO-DAY COURSE REPORTED TO BE IN GOOD ORDER Tho Avondalo Jockey Club’s spring inciting opens to-day, and with big fields eugaged and the course in good order, there should bo somo interesting racing. Tho principal events down for decision to-day aro tho Champion Hack Plato (500 sovs), Avondalo Cup, Avondalo Stakes and Flying Stakes. The Champion Hack Plate was tho richest hack prizo competed for last season, and it was won by Pillow Fight, who went on to capture tho Guineas a couple of days later. A highclass field of hacks will parade for the race to-day, and threo that may bo sorted out for most support aro British Columbia, Gay Shield and Allegretto The Avondale Cup will prove a hard raeo to win, and tho betting should take a wido range. Speedmint, King March, Carfex, Lord Val and All Humbug all appear to have chances and the favourite may come from Speedmint, Carfex and Royal Artist. A number of the youngsters engaged in the Avondalo Stakes have not had a race, so that they will have to be taken on trust. FORTUNATE POSTPONEMENT The postponement of the first day of tho Wanganui meeting on September 21 prompted the Melbourne Argus to publish an article on race postponements, in the course of which it said: "On two occasions the Melbourne Cup has been postponed. When Nimblcfoot won in IS7O tho race was run two days late, and in 1916 Sasanof won a postponed race, which was decided on the Saturday following Cup day. Messrs Stead and Luttrell, tho owners of Sasanof, had cause to consider themselves especially fortunate. A few days before the first Tuesday in November tho horse’s condition was so unsatisfactory that his connections' had almost given up hope of his success, and were oven doubtful whether he could start. The postponement, which was announced on tho cvc of tho Cup day, enabled Sasanof to bo treated, with such good effect that he completely overcame his disabilities.”
