A BRILLIANT SPRINTER, Less than four months ago Gold Boa was practically unknown to the racing public but her brilliant wins at Trentham have placed her amongst the best of the Dominion sprinters. Gold Boa was bred by her owner, Mr J. P. Ilerlifcy, of Waipiata, and by Balboa from March Off, by Markhope from Officious, by Finland from Busybody, by Aprcmont from Tell Tale, by Traduce'r from the imported mare Brunette. From her dam’s side she inherits brilliancy, as Officious, Busybody, and Tell Tale were all smart sprinters. March Off has so far left nothing but winners, as her previous progenv were Fleet Off, Last March, Grand Finale, and Dismiss. The lastnamed was one of the fastest two-year-olds trained at Wingatui for many years, but unfortunately had a deformity in his throat which prevented his racing career being continued. Gold Boa is trained at Wingatui by W. E. Hancock, who has adopted a patient policy with this brilliant fillj that has been well received. SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST IMPORTANT RACE. The Cape Metropolitan Handicap, of £4,000, the most important event in Gouth Africa in the early part of the season, was generally considered to be in the safe keeping of tho powerful Koamer Lodge stable, presided over by Syd. Garrett, which had eight horses entered. Two of these were the New Zealanders Wakatipu and The Khedive. The former, a bay son of Paper Money and Philomela, by Bezonian, and, therefore, a brother to Invoice, had won at nine furlongs three weeks before witn 9.2 without being extended, and had incurred a penalty for the Metropolitan. Eventually the Garrett stable started live horses for the race, which is run over nine furlongs, aud filled the first three places. The winner was the South African-bred Moonlit, with The Khedive second and Sir Francis, also South African-bred, third. Moonlit won running away by nearly two lengths. The winner is a four-year-old horse by imported Cross Bow from All Moonshine, by Ureatorex (son of Carbine) from Blue Moon, by St. Serf, and belongs to the No. 1 family. He won the South African Derby last season. Cross Bow is by Gay Crusader from Popinjay, by St. Frusquin. He won the Newmarket Stakes, but failed badly when favourite in the Derby won by Manna. Moonlit is the first of his progeny to win an important event. GOOD TYPE OF COLT. Haughty Winner, winner of the Fitzaerbert Handicap and Hopeful Stakes at Trentham, is ouo of the Chokebore two-year-olds, and a well-grown colt by Winning Hit from Disdainful. His dam is a half sister to those good Martian horses Bee and Snub, and a sister to the dam of Silver Scorn, while she has previously thrown a good galloper in Aleprisant. Bred in 1913, Disdainful was a present from Mr G. Murray Aynsley to Sir Charles Clifford, and although an old mare, she was given a service to Winning Hit, and Haughty Winner is tho result. He looks a good type of colt, and was having his first race in the Fitzhcrbert Handicap.

HANDICAPS FOR WAIROA. The handicapper, Mr. H. Coyle, has declared the following weights for the first

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES.

Black Friar is said to be galloping in improved form at Hawera, aud he may win a race or two before the season closes. As a two-year-old Black Friar gave great promise, but has done no good this season, due probably to the injury ho sustained in the spring when taken to Australia. Bpiral has now contested four Wellington Cups, but will not be seen out in another, us he is to take Pombal’s place at the Koatanui Stud after this season’s racing (states a Wanganui message). He may make another trip to Ellerslie at Easter, although the sou of Li.mond may be retired prior to that. One of tho unlucky runners in tho Ashhurst Cup was the Hastings-trained Hunting Song gelding, Master Cyklou. Ho did not begin too quickly and he drifted until half a milo from home. When Grand Jury commenced to move forward, Master Cyklon w r as lying at the rear of the field. When they turned into the home stretch Master Cyklon had not improved much, but in the run to the judge he finished like a train.
