British Isles Battered by Gale
SNOW IN LONDON (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Jan. 29. The cold north easterly K alo continues and the coasts of the British Isles are lashed by heavy seas. Considerable damage has been done in several parts, notably Wales, where seas broke through tho defences and flooded the streets in some coastal resorts. Snow fell in London and the streets of Dover are swept by snowstorms. Shipping is suffering a severe buffeting. After being holed through fouling the cable of an anchored German st.ea*n* er off Gravesend and narrowly nursing a collision with a ferry boat, the small ( Dutch motor sloop Wiljan drifted ashore. The captain, his wifo and child and the crew were rescued. Road conditions in many parts of the country are exceptionally bad and in Dorset many motorists found it necessary to abandon their cars for the night and seek shelter in road houses. The occupants of a bus which whs snowed up iu a desolate area of Ex* moor had great difficulty in reaching shelter. Many r«»ads throughout the country are unusable or dangerous for traffic, although the main roads generally are being kept clear.
