Outbreak of Fire in Main Street Flats
TENANTS RENDERED HOMELESS. Fire last evening resulted in two adjacent flats in Main street west becoming entirely uninhabitable though the damage was mainly to the ceilings and roofs. The occupiers were Mr. G. A. Lockwood and family and Mr. F. Clark and family. Tho building is a two-storey one owned by the Abrahams estate and tho loss is covered by insurance. The occupants, however, carried no insurance cover on their furniture and effects. The fire started in the roof of tife flat rented by Mr. Lockwood and was discovered by Mr. Clark’s daughter. An attempt was made with a bucket of water to suppress tho flames but to no purpose. The Fire Brigade w r as then summoned and two engines proceeded to the scene. A brick dividing wall saved another block of flats. On the other side of the building is the Foresters’ hall, a wooden structure, situated fortunately furthest from the seat of the outbreak and the brigade had no difficulty in keeping the fire away. It is not known how the fire occurred. ,
