Useful to Know
When beating butter and sugar much time and trouble may be saved by placing tho basin containing tho ingredients over a saucepan of hot water before beating. But be careful not to leave the basin too long over tho heat. Just a moment suffices.
When washing lace or net curtains, do not iron, but hang up again while damp, and pull into shape.
Peach stains can be removed from materials by placing a liberal supply of cream of tartar on the water-soaked stains and then hanging the article in the sun.
Do not add water to figs when making fig jam. This is one of the causes of fig jam becoming mildewed on top. After using gloves, smooth them out gently and lay in a box, in tho corners of which are pieces of cottonwool scented with perfume. This will remove any odour, and they will be as fresh as new when needed.
To crystallise violets, paint them with white of egg, and then sprinkle them with castor sugar. If the tops of loaves are rubbed with dripping after being taken from the oven, tho bread will never harden. Steam tho bacon instead of boiling it, and you will find that it loses very little by shrinkage. A small piece of orris root placed in the copper will impart a lasting ragrance to lingerie and handkerchiefs.
