Women's Institute
MAKOMAKO The committee of the women’s institute met on Thursday last, Mrs Eising presiding. Also present were Mesdames Eddie, Holdaway and Misses Ness, Howry and Sargent. Arrangements for the flower show, which eventuates this month, were finalised. Previous shows have proved so successful that tho committee has this year decided to extend the function into tho evening and to add musical Items and dancing for the entertainment of patrons. BULLS. The monthly meeting of the Bulls Women’s Institute was held on Monday, February Ist. Mrs H. Ellery presiding over a large attendance. Two new members, Mrs J. Shepherd and Mrs Jackson were welcomed. A tea-cosy which Mrs G. Ellery very kindly donated for a competition, was xvon by Mrs Witherington. Tho competition for tho best three doyleys was won by Mrs W. Hill, Miss M. Carter being second. Miss Routhan kindly judged the entries. Mrs Conner (Wanganui) demonstrated the preparation of cold dishes with the electric refrigerator, Mr Killeen explained the electric washing machine and cooker. Members were reminded of the group meeting to be held in Bulls on February 15th. Nominations for the new committee close on that day. The competition for the group meeting will be for the best three doyleys, shortbread and a sponge jam sandwich. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. MARTQN JUNCTION. A very pleasant afternoon was spent by members of the Marton Junction W.L on Wednesday last. All seemed pleased to meet once again after the holidays. Friends from Hawke’s Bay and Hamilton wero present as well as visitors from neighbouring districts. Four new members wero enrolled. It was hoped to be able to send a bus load to the group meeting at Bulls on February 15. A demonstration of hairpin work was given by Mrs. vv'instanley and as members were keenly interested two classes to follow on were arranged for. Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Davison judged the competition which was for three d’oyleys, the first three to be forwarded to the Bulls group meeting. The awards were Miss Hoffman 1, Mrs. H. Franke 2 and Mrs. Slight 3. After afternoon tea a roll call “How and where I spent Christmas” brought forth some very amusing answers. This was followed by a competition. OROUA DOWNS At the January meeting of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute, Mrs Oliver presided over a small attendance. Tho members all stood iu silenco in sympathy with Mr and Mrs T. D. Scott and family in their recent sad bereavement. The competitions were as follow: Seniors, Mrs Proctor 1, Mrs Albery 2; flowers, Mrs W. ShaiJer J, Mrs V. Bird 2; juniors, Alma Christensen 3, JK.. Dench 2. Mrs Gardiner gave an interesting demonstration on faggoting which was keenly followed by all. Two little visitors gave a tap dance and elocutionary items. Dulcie Christensen was the winner of the “musical circles.”
