Awards For Safe Driving

The number of drivers of motor-vehicles enrolled in the safe-driving competition organised by the National Safety First Association of Britain has reached 100,000. The competition was started in 1918. It was suggested that the giving of an award to a driver would provide an incentive to safety. In the first year 2000 drivers were enrolled in the London area, and in each subsequent year there has been a steady increase.

The competition is restricted to paid drivers, and awards of gold and silver medals, with special bars, are made to men who can produce a record of freedom from accident over a stipulated number of years. In 1934 59,512 drivers received awards. In 26 cases the recipients had had 17 years' freedom from blameworthy accident, 845 had not had an accident in 10 years, while 6601 had clean records for five years.
