Surprisers Are in Turn Surprised

PARTY WITH UNUSUAL FEATURES A merry party, organised by Mr. Ray Lawson, of Palmerston North, in the nature of a surprise, was held at the residence of Miss Joan Nevill, Te Awe Awe street, on Saturday evening, to do honour to Air. Sydney Riddell, son of Air. and Airs. W. Riddell, of Pahiatua street, Hokowhitu, and his bride-elect, Miss Joan Gill, of Wellington. But the tables were turned on the host and his fellow conspirators when the young couple arrived to announce they had been married that morning at the Church of St. Francis do Sale, Island Bay, and had made a dash for Palmerston North after the reception at the residence of Air. and Airs. T. Gill, aunt and uncle of the bride. This announcement was received with great glee and was the signal for much toasting and the offering of hearty felicitations to the happy couple who had thoughtfully brought along some w edding cake. Confetti also mysteriously made its appearance. Several guests had arrived armed with musical instruments such as banjos, ukeleles and guitars, and dancing interspersed with musical items was entered into with zest by some 35 young people. Mr. Hector Burke’s songs to the accompaniment of his Spanish guitar were very* jJOpular items, and there was bridge for those so inclined. A savoury supper was enjoyed and this was made the occasion for more congratulatory speeches from the bridegroom’s particular chums, followed with musical honours. Aliss Nevill was similarly honoured for giving the use of her house for tho party, the guests circling round her to sing ‘‘For Auld Lang Byne” before departing on their way. The bride had chosen a frock of floral georgette with white evening coat, her mother wearing black lace. Mrs. Gillies (Wellington), aunt of the bridegroom, was in black georgette, Aliss Nevill’s frock being of blue taffeta. Among those present were Mr. and Airs. Houghton, Mr. and Mrs. Poole, Misses J. Houghton, J. Brown, M. Giiiott, R. Bull, R. Tarr, AJcssrs W. Houghton, Amos, L. Thorne, R. Tilson and W. Oliver. Air. and Airs. S. Riddell will make their new home in Wellington.
