It is hardly accurate to describo Queen Elizabeth as the first Scotswoman ever to be Queen of Euglaud. Three months after his coronation, in the year 1100, Henry I. married Matilda, daughter of King Malcolm of Scotland and grand-daughter of the ‘‘ gracious Duncan” murdered by Macbeth; her corouation took place on the same day. Miss Strickland iu her now outmoded “Lives of the Queen of England,” auspicious union of tho AngloNorman Henry I. with Matilda of Scotland . . we may trace all tho constitutional blessings which this free country at present enjoys. It was through the influeee of this virtuous Queen that Heyiry granted the important charter . which was used in the reign of John to form a legal authority for the demands made on the King and embodied in the terms or Magna Carta.
