Women’s Institute
TWYFORD MEETING. The first meeting this year of the Twyford Women’s Institute was held in the school on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Manson, vice-president, who presided, cordially welcomed all present. She expressed sympathy with two original members, Mrs. Millar, the institute pianist, and her daughter, Miss AlcMichael, in their recent bereavement, all standing for a short time. A number of nominations were Received for the new committee. Members expressed great pleasure that Aliss Spencer had bone honoured by His Alajesty the King, and congratulations are to be forwarded to her. It was also decided to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mrs. Bibby, who was a greatfavourite with members. Mrs. C. J. Baker gave an interesting and instructive talk to garden’lovera on bulb culture and gardening hints generally. She also answered a number of questions, nad with Mtar Walker, a visitor from Auckland, judged the competitions, which resulted—Pot of gooseberry jam, Mrs. Burge 1, Airs. Herbison 2, Airs. Bixley 3; three best blooms, Airs. Manson 1, Mesdames Cameron and Bixley 2, Mis* Anderson 3. Mrs. Baker and Aliss Walker were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. The hostesses for the afternoon, Alesdames Nicoll and McNab, served a very welcome afternoon, after which Airs. AlcNab delighted members with two songs, “Mother Macree" and “I Love the Aloon." The singing of the National Anth*n» brought a hapy afternoon to a close, WAIPUKURAU MEETING. The first 1937 meeting of the Waipw kurau Women's Institute was held i* the Alasonic Hall, Waipukurau. o» Tuesday afternoon, when there wa* • good attendance of members, presided over by the president, Mrs H. Duckworth. A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Mr* Bibby, Waipawa, who was a staunch supportei of the Institute movement. A Jettei of congratulation was sent to M»m Spence, on receiving the Order of th« British Empire. Two new members and a visiting Institute member from Matamau were welcomed. Nominations for the new year's committee were received, Mr* E. J. Turnei being nominated for the Southern 'Hawke’s Bay Federation committee. On behalf of the members, the president presented Alesdames S. Hibberd and Hampton, who are leaving the district, with small gifts, wishing them every success for the future. After afternoon tea had been dis* pensed by the hostesses for the afternoon, Alesdames A. Bliss, J. Bendeich, H. Williamson, P. Blair and Mi*s Tt: Bayliss, final arrangements were mdtfa for the Institute garden party, which is to .be held in Mrs Bromell's, on Wednesday. he following are the results of th* competition* for the day. Best collection of flowers: Miss Bayliss 1, Mr* G. Bromell 2. Best dahlia bloom: Mr* Peterson 1, Mrs Bromell 2 and 3. B«*.* carnation: Mr* F. Fraser 1.
Lucky Hastings. A fine compliment to Hastings wa* paid by a recent visitor from Upper Hutt when, in the course of ordering from a local seeds merchant specimens of certain plaDts she saw at Cornwall Park, she wrote as follows: week I was in your town and was very pleased with the wonderful beauty of the place, and visiting Cornwall Park I was thrilled with the glorious loveliness of it all. Words fail to express the appreciation I felt for so much beauif that I stood amidst. You are a Tuck* people to have so much beauty aroat^ 1 you. Your bedding begonia and th# loannas won my heart."
